Happy birthday Gardening Leave

A very warm Spring welcome and Happy Easter to all the Friends of Gardening Leave. My blog this month is a celebration and thanks to many of the wonderful Friends of Gardening Leave supporters who have made certain events in the past couple of weeks so memorable.

Firstly many thanks to all of the 77 runners who took part in the 5k fun run in Duthie Park, Aberdeen on April 1st  www.funrun5k.co.uk  Particular thanks goes to Andy Harrold for cajoling, encouraging and helping make the event happen.

Another recent event to celebrate was the award given to Gardening Leave in the Gardening against the Odds competition organised by the Daily Telegraph. Anna will write more about this in her blog but we were all delighted to have been nominated.and then so excited to have been named runners up.

At the ceremony in Syon House in Chiswick we received a framed certificate and set of prizes which included a fruit tree which will be planted at Gardening Leave Chelsea, an array of gardening products and a wonderful ceramic pot. Our thanks to everyone for the award.

The afternoon was a tribute to all the gardeners who are despite all kinds of challenges  create beautiful gardens around the country ranging from vegetable patches in enormous disused building sacks to producing community gardens out of overgrown industrial urban sites. Many well known gardeners spoke including Alan Titchmarsh and there was even a call to all would be guerilla gardeners to spread the gardening word from Richard Reynolds http://www.guerrillagardening.org   In many cities including London there are so many of these bare patches of land at traffic lights and road intersections many of which have been transformed via the odd strategically placed seed bomb of quick growing annuals planted in the dead of night. Why not make up some seed bombs now to plant in all those spaces which will soon be filled instead with weeds ?

Do check out the news of the Fun run with all the names of the runners  www.funrun5k.co.uk and also the Londonist article about the Gardening against the Odds competition  http://londonist.com/2012/03/londoners-win-gardening-against-the-odds-awards.php.

Again many thanks and best wishes to all of the Friends of Gardening Leave.
